Parkers Points: 92

Tasting Notes
The mainly Callet grapes are harvested from the oldest vines from many small vineyards in the sub-region of central Mallorca called "Son Negre" -- the Dark Place (because the intense sunlight almost bakes the soil with its heat). 17 months of aging in French oak barrels results in a voluptuous wine with intensified aromatics, ripeness, fullness, complexity, and length - and yet, amazingly, with a firm acidic structure.

Calar del Río Mundo - Bodegas Calar

D.O. (1° Control Apellation) Valdepeñas. Tempranillo 100%.
Six months in first-use oak casks with strictly controlled temperature and humidity, the wine matures slowly and has ample time to develop, both in contact with the wood and again in the bottle. When still young, Calar del río Mundo has a dark, ruby red colour wich is clear and bright; its movement in the glass is fluid and agile.

Frank and clear, its first aromas of fruit, flowers and spices combine harmoniously with the following toasted oaky tones against a backdrop of mediterranean shrublands. Its taste on the palate is clear and sincere, with elegant tannins and vigorous expression, ample and silky. Its aftertaste is long and persistant.

Calar del río Mundo was awarded the Gold Medal at the Andalusian International Wine Competition 2.007 wich took place in Seville.

Selected harvest with vineyard yields limited to less than 4,460 Pounds of grape per acre (5,000 kilograms per hectare).

The harvest began in early October starting with the most mature vineyard parcels. The two varieties of grape used for this wine (90% Tinto Fino, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon) are kept separated during the entire harvest and vinification process. The two types of grapes are fermented in tanks with natural yeasts, which begins the vinification process. During fermentation, which lasts about 30 days, the wine is pumped over and agitated daily to control the density, temperature and evolution of the yeast. At the end of this fermentation, the wine is removed from the tanks and then proceeds to the malolactic fermentation.

The malolactic fermentation is made without adding bacteria, and a temperature of 68°F (20°C) is maintained over a period of 22 days, which controls the levels of malic and lactic acids. When the malic acid is less than 0.1 gram per liter, the wine is separated from the lees and transferred directly to the oak barrels without undergoing any type of filtration, clarification, or cold treatment.

Selected harvest with vineyard yields limited to less than 4,460 Pounds of grape per acre (5,000 kilograms per hectare).

Harvest began in early October in selecting parcels showing higher concentration of color in the grapes, and from which all unacceptable grape clusters are rejected.

The three varieties that make up this wine (Tinto Fino 80%, Cabernet Sauvignon 10% and Merlot 10%) are harvested and vinified separately. After a brief period of chilled pre-fermentation, spontaneous alcoholic fermentation is initiated (without adding yeast). During the fermentation, which lasts 22 days, the wine is pumped over and agitated daily in order to control the density, temperature and evolution of the yeast. At the end of the fermentation, the wine is removed from the tanks and then proceeds to the malolactic fermentation.

Viña Pedrosa GRAN SELECCION

This wine is the result of choiced grapes from vines over 60 years old. Mauro Pérez was born surrounded by the vines of Pedrosa de Duero. A wise man with a deep love of his land, he tilled the vineyards and planted vines that today are the source of this unique wine. The old wise, crooked vines in the Valtarreña Estate, filled with many virtues acquired throughout their long life, produce grapes of exceptional quality.

This is "The Family's wine". Its supreme quality is its highest exponent. Beautiful, very intense, lively colour. Complex aroma, blending primary notes of red currants and liquorice with numerous spicy and mineral hints. A very wide wine, voluptuous and well-balanced. Ripe tannins, ample and firm. The magic of the terroir and an outstanding vinification worthy of praise for the difficulties its making entailed, place this wine at the summit.
What fullness of nuances! Grandiose, with an inmense potential in the bottle. A yield of barely 18 hectolitres per hectare was obtained for this wine.

Grape variety :
100% tinto fino (Tempranillo).

Ageing:
26 months in casks
36 months in the bottle before being put on the market.
